Saturday, 6/11/2022 — Workshop on Writing and Visiting People in Prison

1:30pm, Saturday, June 11, Friends Meeting at Cambridge, 5 Longfellow Park
Workshop led by Tom Ash and Brian Gilligan.
Tom met Brian while attending the Quaker worship group (under the care of Wellesley Friends Meeting) at a Massachusetts medium security prison in 2002. After some time, Tom became a prison visitor and continued to meet with Brian in prison until 2015 when Brian was finally released after nearly 29 years of incarceration. During that time, Tom’s and Brian’s lives were transformed in ways neither could have imagined at the outset. Today Brian works regularly and owns his own home. He has been very involved in providing housing and other supports to individuals coming out of incarceration. Tom is currently supporting friends in three different prisons and co-facilitates a Sharing Circle for formerly incarcerated individuals. Tom and Brian will share memories of a special relationship that began many years ago and continues to the present day.
In addition to Tom and Brian, at this workshop others will share their experiences corresponding with and visiting incarcerated people. Come learn about the many different opportunities and possibilities for getting more involved with this work.
This event is co-sponsored by FMC’s Prison Fellowship Group, FMC’s Peace and Social Justice Committee and the Community Reentry Program, Inc.
